The T-Beam and other boards do not have an on board voltage divider, so you have to add a couple resistors to provide your own.
The T-Beam happens to use a battery charger chip (AXP192) that does support reading the battery voltage (probably in a quite precise way).
It would be interesting to support it so that hw modding the boards is no longer required.
